Africa Data Centres announces huge partnership with DPA SA to build 12MW solar farm

Africa Data Centres has announced the first phase of an electricity wheeling partnership with DPA SA.
The partnership will generate electricity for the Africa Data Centres CPT1 (Cape Town) data centre, courtesy of a new 12MW solar farm built by DPA SA in the Free State.
Construction of the solar farm will begin within the next three months and is expected to provide CPT1 with power by the end of the year.
The agreement, which will run for 20 years, highlights Africa Data Centres’ commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, said the company.
“Today’s announcement represents a significant stride in our initiative to energise South African data centres sustainably, advancing our objective of achieving carbon neutrality,” said Africa Data Centres CEO Tesh Durvasula.
CPT1 and the solar farm
The solar farm built by DPA SA in the Free State will initially supplement CPT1’s onsite solar generation during the day. At night, CPT1 will continue to use grid-supplied power.
This hybrid approach complements an existing focus on efficiency and will underscore Africa Data Centre’s commitment to carbon neutrality in the future.
“Beyond procuring renewable energy, our commitment to an efficiency strategy has earned us the internationally recognised ISO50001 certification for the effective operation of our data centres,” said Durvasula.
DPA SA shares Africa Data Centres’ commitment to sustainability and is excited to work with Africa Data Centres on this project.
“DPA SA brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in delivering high-quality, sustainable energy solutions to this partnership,” said DPA SA CEO Nawfal El Fadil.
Once phase one is completed, Africa Data Centres and DPA SA will begin phase two of the partnership project – which involves supplying Africa Data Centres’ Johannesburg data centres (JHB1 and JHB2) with solar power, too.
