Schneider Electric leads the lithium battery revolution with its Smart-UPS range

Schneider Electric, through its APC brand, is a leading force driving the adoption of commercial-grade Smart-UPSs that use lithium-ion batteries.

This is an important step forward for the industry, as lithium-ion UPSs are vastly superior to traditional VRLA systems.

Their key improvements include:

  • Life expectancy – APC UPSs using lithium-ion batteries have a 10-year battery life and a 5-year warranty – compared to 3–5-year VRLA battery life and 1-2-year VRLA warranties.
  • Safety and Weight – APC UPS batteries are fully compliant and certified to deliver unrivalled safety. They also weigh up to 60% less than VRLA batteries.
  • Ease of use – Lithium-ion UPSs can be managed remotely and require fewer battery exchanges, ensuring you don’t need IT experts located at every building that uses a UPS.
  • Space – APC Lithium-ion batteries are up to 50% smaller than those in VLRA UPSs, while providing higher power density.
  • Cost – While lithium-ion batteries have higher up-front costs, their total cost of ownership (TCO) is far lower than VRLA batteries.
  • Charging – Lithium-ion batteries recharge in half the time and offer three-times the battery life of VLRA batteries.
  • Sustainability – Lithium-ion is a much cleaner battery technology than VLRA.
  • Efficiency – APC lithium-ion UPSs operate without degradation at temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius, reducing your air conditioning bill.

APC lithium-ion UPSs

Schneider Electric’s APC brand offers a wide range of UPSs that use lithium-ion batteries to deliver increased value to your organisation.

These are divided into two main categories: Line Interactive UPSs (SCL and SMTL ranges) and Online UPSs (SRTL range).

The main differences between these two systems are as follows:

  • Line-interactive UPSs are more suitable for shallow racks, as they are between 23-32cm in depth. Line-interactive UPSs are only rack-mountable.
  • Online UPSs are tower-convertible and rack-mountable, and support up to nine battery packs.
  • Line-interactive UPSs have a VA range of up to 3000VA.
  • Online UPSs have a VA range of up to 10kVA.

Online UPSs are also more expensive than line-interactive UPSs, and use different lithium-ion battery chemistry.

The line-interactive models and their batteries are a set size of 1U, 2U, 3U, or 4U, depending on the model, whereas the online UPSs comprise a 2U UPS with support for up to nine battery packs that are each 1U in size.

Both ranges include battery management systems that allow for advanced monitoring of your UPSs, too, resulting in more efficient operation and increased safety.
