New research shows South Africans want to spend less money on heating their geyser

LookSee has partnered with BusinessTech to conduct an extensive home efficiency survey in South Africa.
A major finding from this research was that South Africans are becoming more interested in reducing the money they spend on heating their geysers.
This makes sense, as experts estimate that the average family spends 40-50% of its monthly electricity bill on geyser heating.
Historically, however, South Africans have felt helpless about addressing this.
The popular perception was that the measures that were available to them were expensive, inconvenient, or not impactful enough.
For example, solar geysers are often the first option that comes to mind, but these are widely seen as expensive to install and maintain and often battle to provide enough hot water for the family during winter.
As a result, many South Africans have instead defaulted to manual options like switching their geyser on and off at their DB board.
However, after a single cold shower, this strategy usually fails, leaving homes paying in full for their geyser heating.
Electric geyser conversions
Thankfully, new solutions have entered the South African market in recent months that tick every box – they are affordable, convenient, and deliver meaningful savings.
The best of these options is converting your electric geyser to get power from standard solar panels.
This eliminates the cost of installing a new geyser and adapting your plumbing. Instead, electric geyser conversions simply require that you install a few standard solar panels and connect a controlling device to your current geyser.
The financial case for these conversions is unprecedented. LookSee’s data shows that most families financing an electric geyser conversion could save enough money on their electricity bill to cover their monthly repayment completely, with a little cash left to spare to put back into your pocket.
In simple terms, this means that through a LookSee Solar Loan, you could incur no capital outlay, and can begin saving money from day one!
Key trends
The LookSee Home Efficiency Survey found that South Africans are becoming aware of the value that electric geyser conversions provide.
This was proved by 25.78% of all respondents saying they would like to convert their existing electric geyser to use power directly from solar panels.
This was the most popular choice when respondents were asked what they would like to do to limit their geyser’s high electricity consumption.
By contrast, only 18.5% of respondents wanted to install a solar geyser, while 8.62% wanted to install a gas geyser.
Taking action
While the research revealed a strong interest in reducing geyser heating costs, and huge interest in electric geyser conversions, it also found that most South Africans have not yet taken action.
In fact, only 37.87% of respondents said they are doing something to control their geyser heating costs.
Nearly 48.09% of respondents said they are still trying to figure out what they can do about it, while 14.04% said they have either given up or don’t think anything can be done.
Thankfully, the rise of electric geyser conversions in South Africa is poised to change these numbers in the coming months and years.
LookSee is already seeing lots of interest in these conversion kits, and as more South Africans become aware of their unrivalled value, conversions are poised to become the most popular way to reduce geyser heating bills in South Africa.
