Hands-on with the nubia Focus 5G – A smartphone built for incredible photography
The nubia Focus 5G is a great smartphone for South Africans who are serious about photography on the go, packing a powerful 108MP sensor with Neovision AI Photography for next-level photos and videos.
The nubia Focus 5’s camera hardware is paired with a stylish design, a stunning 6.6-inch 120Hz display, and 256GB storage – ensuring it is an excellent all-round device.
This was our experience when hands-on testing the nubia Focus 5G, which we unpack in more detail below.
Pocket photography
The first thing you notice about the nubia Focus 5G is its impressive camera system that looks like a traditional DSLR lens.
It offers many photography features to take on dedicated cameras, including its powerful 108MP sensor that features a 1/1.67-inch sensor and an incredibly large f 1.75 aperture.
When combined with the nubia Focus 5G’s Neovision AI Photography system, this camera system provides you with professional-level photography – especially in low-light conditions.
You can also capture everything from landscapes to close-ups thanks to its four focal lengths – 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 72mm.
The 50mm focal length produces excellent portraits, while the 72mm option barrels closer to distant subjects, giving you all the range you need.
Overall, this camera easily offered the best smartphone photography performance we have seen in a device under R4,000.
An 8MP sensor on the front of the phone then captures excellent selfies, ensuring you look great in all your social media posts.
Impressive display
The nubia Focus 5G’s impressive camera is paired with a stunning display – a vibrant 6.6-inch HD+ screen that delivers a great view under any lighting conditions.
It features a 120Hz refresh rate and a touch sampling rate of 240, too, allowing us to enjoy smooth videos, games, and scrolling.
At the top of the display, you will find a handy notification feature called Live Island Interactive.
Centred around the front-facing camera, this island displays crucial notifications, reminders, and real-time activities such as timers and ongoing voice recordings.
Solid performance
The nubia Focus 5G offers excellent performance thanks to its octa-core processor and 6GB memory – which expands up to 16GB thanks to 10GB of Dynamic RAM.
Dynamic RAM uses memory fusion technology to take advantage of unused storage on the smartphone, giving you a performance boost and ensuring your nubia Focus 5G runs well at all times.
With 256GB of storage, you also don’t have to worry about running out of space – even when using Dynamic RAM. This large capacity provides plenty of room to keep capturing photos and videos throughout the day.
Powering the nubia Focus 5G’s impressive hardware is a large 5,000mAh battery that ensures all-day usage without the need for charging.
Capturing photos and videos is typically a big drain on your battery, making the 5,000mAh unit a welcome addition to the nubia Focus 5G.
When you eventually do need to charge your battery, it will recharge quickly thanks to built-in 22.5W fast charging.
