500kW all-in-one high voltage power container showcased in Muldersdrift

Clients across SA recently attended the event where Vestwoods showcased its 500kW HV BESS system.

Vestwoods, the international battery manufacturer, now well established in South Africa, has showcased its, all-in-one high voltage (HV) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) during a showcase event staged at Misty Hills in Muldersdrift’s Kromdraai Valley.

Misty Hills has chosen to implement a 500kw, 1075kwh system to support business continuity during load shedding and mitigate power losses during cable theft and long repair cycles.  

The venue is running the BESS system with a 500kwp newly installed solar system, slashing their utility bill by actively managing load and peak demand charges. 

Additionally, as the system is quiet, with a noise level under 68dB, it adds an eco-friendly component to the green energy system deployed, supporting Misty Hills’ commitment to ‘going green’. 

The HV BESS is an on- and off-grid system, which is fitted in a 20-foot container with advanced BESS technology built in, with a state of the art DC air conditioning system, a fire suppression system, and the Vestwoods proprietary battery management system (BMS). 

The system includes high cycle life LFP cells, multi-level protection and fault isolation, and intelligent local and remote monitoring with data storage and data query features.

The HV BESS generated strong interest from customers, resellers, EPC companies and prospective distributors during the showcase and briefing session, says Brendon Scott, Managing Director at Vestwoods South Africa. 

“There has been a significant gap in the local market for all-in-one single unit HV BESS systems – particularly for industrial, commercial, mining and agricultural applications,” says Scott.

He explains that the higher voltage of the HV BESS enables rapid charging and discharging of the battery system, making these systems well-suited for managing sudden high-power demands and high-energy applications. 

The high energy density enables the HV BESS to store more energy per unit volume, making them ideal for compact and efficient power solutions. 

Additionally, the high voltage allows for reduced current, which lowers energy losses and conductor sizes, resulting in a more efficient system.

While the HV BESS solutions have been around for some time, they are now starting to play an increasingly important role in South Africa’s future energy landscape. 

The Misty Hills installation involved a collaboration from key Vestwoods partners, including IOT Revolution, Optimal Energy and Zephyr Solar, each providing skills and materials to enable a successful installation and configuration of the system. 

Vestwoods South Africa offers the full system warranty in country and carries spare parts and optional extras in their warehouse in Johannesburg. 

All systems include commissioning and support by Vestwoods factory trained engineers.
