MyBroadband readers spent a lot of money during Black Friday 2024
34% of MyBroadband readers spent over R5,000 during Black Friday 2024, while 17% forked out at least R10,000 on deals.
These are two of the key takeaways from the MyBroadband Black Friday Spend survey, conducted in December 2024.
1,420 MyBroadband readers took part in the survey and shared information about how much they spent and where they shopped during Black Friday.
86% of the respondents are purchasing decision-makers in their homes – and 46% come from households that bring in at least R40,000 per month – making the findings of great value to South African companies.
Key results
Over 40% of MyBroadband readers surveyed said they set a specific budget for Black Friday 2024, showing an eagerness to spend on deals.
Furthermore, 20% of these shoppers said discounts and promotions convinced them to exceed their budgets to take advantage of good deals.
This shows that retailers who aggressively marketed to South Africans were able to generate more sales.
As a result:

Furthermore, 68% of respondents shopped online during Black Friday, highlighting the continued shift towards e-commerce among South African consumers.
This reinforces that retailers must prioritise online shopping deals when planning for future sales, and ensure their advertising campaigns reach people through digital channels.

What people bought
The MyBroadband survey also found that many South Africans spent their money on technology products during Black Friday.
There was a strong preference for smartphones, TVs, speakers and headphones, games, gaming consoles, and home appliances – with 44% of respondents stating they bought these items.
Many MyBroadband readers bought general items like groceries (50%), household essentials (30%), and clothing (29%), too.
