What to look for in a TV – and why display technologies matter

TV display innovation has accelerated massively in recent years, and with a wide variety of options on the market, it has become increasingly important to make an informed decision when upgrading.

Among the most impressive developments in TV display technology are QLED, QD-Mini LED, and improved refresh rates.

Leading TV and smart appliance brand TCL uses each of these innovations to produce industry-leading displays that make its TVs awesome.

For example, TCL offers several popular models that feature these technologies. Its C655 is an excellent QLED TV, while models like the C755, C855, P755, and X955 offer impressive Mini-LED and QD Mini-LED displays.

Additionally, these sought-after models offer a variety of refresh rates up to 144Hz for smooth visuals.

Below, we highlight the benefits of these display technologies.

QLED

TVs typically comprise two main panels – the viewer-facing LED or LCD panel, and a second LED backlighting panel.

The LED backlighting panel projects light onto the viewer-facing panel to construct the image that you see when watching TV.

QLED TVs feature an additional middle layer that significantly enhances the picture quality, called a Quantum Dot layer.

In this case, the LED backlighting transmits through the layer of inorganic nanocrystal Quantum Dots – enhancing the vibrancy and hue of lights from the LEDs.

This results in improved colour accuracy, over 1 billion colours, and more realistic, natural-looking visuals on the viewer-facing panel.

In fact, TCL’s QLED TVs produce 58.3% more pure colour than traditional LED TVs, allowing your eyes to pick out small details in every scene and experience multi-level depths of field.

For example, the TCL C655 QLED TV utilises 95% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, producing realistic and true-to-life colour just like you would see in the real world.

Furthermore, TCL QLED displays can last up to 100,000 hours – or five hours of TV every day for over 50 years – without fading.

QD-Mini LED and 144Hz refresh rates

South Africans with even more premium tastes must look to TCL’s QD Mini-LED TVs, which offer all the same benefits of a QLED display – and more.

QD Mini-LED TVs feature the same Quantum Dot layer but with even smaller backlights.

TCL models to look out for include the C755 QD-Mini LED 4K TV, the C855 Premium QD-Mini LED TV, or the world’s largest QD-Mini LED TV – the 115-inch X955 Max.

By reducing the size of the LED backlights, a manufacturer can fit more individual lights into the panel, and therefore increase the number of local dimming zones.

QD Mini-LED TVs offer thousands of dimming zones, resulting in more accurate light control, crisper image details, improved brightness, and better contrasts – while reducing any negative blooming effects.

Whether you choose a QLED TV or a QD-Mini-LED unit, it will pair well with a 144Hz refresh rate.

TCL equips most of its QLED and QD Mini-LED TVs with this refresh rate to provide crisper visuals while reducing motion blur and lag in fast-paced action scenes.

This is especially good for gamers, as it lets them run, race, and shoot their way to victory without any screen tearing or blurring.
