Why software matters – From 65% to 90% solar savings with Wetility’s AI mode

When most people think about going solar, they think about panels on the roof and batteries in the garage.

But there’s a powerful layer behind it all that too often gets overlooked: the software.

Solar hardware gets you part of the way there. But to fully maximise your investment – especially with the opposing requirements of savings versus protection from grid outages – one needs smart software doing the heavy lifting.

With its new app and the launch of AI mode, Wetility proves that the future of solar isn’t just hardware – it’s intelligent management.

The hidden cost of solar without software

For years, solar providers have been selling systems that leave a lot of savings on the table.

These systems generate power, maybe store some, and display basic numbers on an app.

But they don’t learn. They don’t adapt. And they certainly don’t make life easier for the customer.

That’s a problem. Especially in markets like ours in South Africa, where energy volatility isn’t just a nuisance — it’s a daily reality.

Load shedding, tariff spikes, cloudy weather, load reduction, cable theft… we need more than just electricity. We need a system that can anticipate.

Without intelligent software to manage when and how energy is stored or consumed, batteries are often being either overworked or underutilised.

This means homes end up depending on expensive or absent grid electricity, while solar power can also go to waste when it’s not used at the right time.

That leaves many solar users losing out on achieving the full value of their system, and their electricity bills stay higher than they should be.

In a country like South Africa, where energy costs are rising fast, that makes a big difference.

Up to 90% solar savings with Wetility’s AI mode software

With the launch of its refreshed app and AI mode, Wetility flips the script on solar performance and electricity bill savings.

Instead of relying on manual scheduling or fixed backup rules, AI mode uses many data points to automatically adjust how and when the battery charges or discharges:

  • Live weather data
  • Live energy usage data
  • Historical energy usage behaviour
  • Real-time grid conditions

What does that mean in practice, and importantly, what does that mean for our wallets?

“AI mode is like having your own smart energy assistant,” explained Wetility Chief Product Officer Ikenna Oguguo.

“It automatically adjusts your solar system in real time based on your habits, the weather, and the grid. It works quietly in the background, but you’ll notice the savings.”

Nearing 1,000 Wetility customers now using AI mode since launch on May 1st this year, we are seeing their grid electricity use cut by up to 90%,” said Oguguo.

“That’s a big deal, especially while still keeping enough battery for unexpected outages. Balancing savings and backup is tough because it’s specific to each customer’s situation, which also changes daily.”

“That personalisation is exactly what AI mode is built to address.”

Software – The new solar must-have

What makes this so revolutionary isn’t just the tech – it’s the shift in mindset.

Wetility is treating energy software like realproduct innovation, not an afterthought to help sell panels.

And that’s where many in the industry fall short.

While traditional solar apps offer basic monitoring dashboards, they often lack intelligent automation, real-time responsiveness, or easy setup processes.

The industry has focused so long on price-per-watt and panel efficiency, while often overlooking the most important contributor to savings – the user.

“Our guiding principle from the very start has been how to help customers get the most out of their Wetility system – every day and without the effort,” said Oguguo.

“That thinking led us to build AI mode: a fully automated, adaptive engine that takes complex data and turns it into real, measurable savings.”

In the next phase of solar adoption, winners won’t just be the ones with the best panels or sleekest batteries. They’ll be the ones with the smartest software — and the best customer experience.
