Most pirated movies through BitTorrent

TorrentFreak has released its list of the top 10 most pirated movies for last week (31 March – 6 April 2014), which showed Ride Along and The Nut Job entering the charts at the top to dethrone The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

The Legend of Hercules, in the seventh spot, is also a newcomer to TorrentFreak’s rankings.

Together, the three new entrants helped knock Anchorman 2, Lone Survivor, and Grudge Match off the charts, while all the other films, with the exception of Frozen, dropped some places.

The table below shows the top 10 rankings of Torrentfreak, the US iTunes Movies store, and the South African iTunes Films store:

Legal options

While there is nothing illegal about using BitTorrent to download content, it is illegal (perhaps even criminal) to torrent copyrighted media without permission to do so.

Examples of content that is legally distributed through BitTorrent include Linux distributions, patches for Blizzard games such as StarCraft and Diablo, and Vodo.net.

When it comes to legally buying or renting blockbuster films online, South Africans don’t have many options. That said, at least there are some options now, unlike a few years ago.

For example, Apple has launched a South African version of its iTunes Movies service, and DStv BoxOffice offers movie rentals online.

DStv Premium and Extra subscribers can also rent movies from BoxOffice using their PVR decoders, so long as it is HD-capable.

The table below shows the movies listed as most popular on DStv BoxOffice:

DStv BoxOffice Most Popular: 7 April 2014

TV Series

Since TorrentFreak doesn’t do a weekly round-up of the most pirated TV series, it is interesting to consider the recent premiere of Game of Thrones Season 4 as we did the films above, contrasting legal versus illegal channels.

Game of Thrones season 4 premièred on HBO in the United States at 21:00 on 6 April 2013 EST, or 03:00 7 April 2014 South Africa time.

Just hours after the first episode of the new season of Game of Thrones aired, it was already the most popular TV show torrent on prominent BitTorrent indices and trackers such as Kickass Torrents and The Pirate Bay.

In South Africa, Game of Thrones season 4 will start on Friday,18 April 2014, two episodes behind the US schedule.

DStv Premium subscribers have been given access to all 3 seasons of Game of Thrones on the DStv Catch Up service. This means they can stream or download all the previous episodes of Game of Thrones via the DStv Catch Up website, or DStv iOS app.

Owners of the new DStv Explora decoder have also received seasons 1–3 of Game of Thrones as complete “box sets” on the decoder-based DStv Catch Up service.

As season 4 airs, the episode will build up every week into what DStv called a “super stack”, so that by the time the season has ended all the season’s episodes will be available to watch on the Explora.
