Game of Thrones sets new piracy record

The last episode of the fourth season of Game of Thrones has smashed the previous BitTorrent record of the most simultaneous users on a single torrent, TorrentFreak reported on Monday, 17 June 2014.

According to the post, the tracker reported at one stage that 254,114 people were sharing a single torrent of the latest Game of Thrones episode.

Game of Thrones held the previous record, with the 5th episode in season 4, “First of His Name”, achieving 207,054 simultaneous sharers.

TorrentFreak estimated that the season finale, “The Children”, which aired this past Sunday (15 June 2014) in the US, was downloaded 1.5-million times in 12 hours with the total downloads expected to exceed 7.5-million in the weeks to come.

Media reports citing Nielsen data said that the episode was watched by 7.1-million viewers, a dramatic increase in ratings since last season’s finale which attracted 5.4-million viewers.

In South Africa, the episode is set to air on M-Net (DStv 101) this Friday, 20 June 2014, from 21:30.
