Top pirated, downloaded movies in SA

Need for Speed and The Other Woman have unseated Transcendence and Noah from their top spots in TorrentFreak’s weekly list of the most pirated movies on BitTorrent.

Along with new entrants to the charts, Transformers: Age of Extinction and Brick Mansions, they helped push Sabotage down to 7th place.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2, another newcomer, pushed Rio 2 to 9th place, while X-Men hung onto its last spot on the list.

Together, the three new entrants caused Muppets Most Wanted, A Million Ways to Die in the West, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier to drop off the rankings.

The table below shows how TorrentFreak’s top 10 compares against the iTunes charts and the most popular movies on DStv BoxOffice.

Legal options

It is worth noting that there is nothing inherently illegal about using BitTorrent technology to download content.

Examples of content that is legally distributed through BitTorrent includes Linux distributions, games purchased from the Humble Store or Blizzard Entertainment, and Vodo.net.

However, it remains illegal (perhaps even criminal in South Africa) to download copyrighted media without permission to do so.

There may not be many legal options for buying or renting films online in South Africa, but at least there are some options now. A few years ago there were none.

For example, MultiChoice launched its DStv BoxOffice movie rental service in 2011, which it brought to the web during 2012, and Apple has launched a South African version of its iTunes Movies service.

Anyone can open a DStv BoxOffice account online and rent movies to download or stream through MultiChoice’s desktop or online players.

DStv Premium and Extra subscribers can rent movies from BoxOffice using an HD-capable PVR decoder, and also get discounts on online rentals.

Like BoxOffice, iTunes lets users rent movies to stream or download via its client software.

Unlike BoxOffice, iTunes also lets users buy digital copies of movies.
