FlySAA downtime: CEO responds

Acting South Africa Airways CEO Chris Smyth has issued a public apology for downtime experienced on the company’s online booking facility FlySAA.com over the weekend, revealing that its’ service providers were to blame.

Numerous internet users trying to access the FlySAA.com website on Saturday night and Sunday morning were unpleasantly surprised when they were redirected to a parked website with the message “flysaa.com expired on 01/17/2010 and is pending renewal or deletion”.

“The problem was a direct result of service providers not meeting their obligations and SAA will be taking further action in this regard.” commented Smyth via the now functional FlySAA website.

“Unfortunately SAA did not receive any pre-warning of the pending issue but within hours of the problem being identified, the SAA IT personnel were able to address the problem ensuring minimal disruptions to our customers.” he continued.

Although the problem was rectified on Sunday afternoon some users did experience intermittent periods of downtime.

“Due to the nature of the problem and the way in which the Internet works, it took some time before the rectification was propagated to all Internet Service Providers which explains why our customers experienced differing intervals of outage time.“ Smyth explained.
