Most pirated, downloaded movies in the world

TorrentFreak’s weekly ranking of the top 10 most pirated movies is out, using estimates to chart the films which have seen the most downloads over the BitTorrent protocol.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and American Sniper held onto their first and second places from the previous week, while Fury entered at number 3, pushing Into the Woods down to fourth place.

Other new entrants include The Judge, Vice, and Wild.

Together, the four newcomers to TorrentFreak’s charts pushed The Book of Life, Penguins of Madagascar, Before I go to Sleep, and The Drop out of the ranking.

The table below shows TorrentFreak’s top 10, and how it compares to the list of most popular movies through local and international channels.

DStv doesn’t provide a ranking for the most popular movies on its BoxOffice rental service, and as such the titles are in no particular order.

Legal options

South Africa has seen a number of legal channels for on-demand video come online in the past few years.

2014 was a particularly exciting year in this regard as Vidi from Times Media Group and MTN FrontRow started offering Netflix-like subscription video on demand (SVOD) services.

Both services also have a transactional video on demand (TVOD) catalogue, offering online movie rentals in much the same way as the online component of DStv BoxOffice.

Altech also launched a VOD service with Node, a decoder-like box that can act as a hub for home automation devices and which can be connected to a dish antenna that points to the same satellite as DStv.

Like Vidi and FrontRow, Node also offers both SVOD and TVOD services.

MultiChoice responded to the new entrants by extending the availability of its satellite-based transactional service, DStv BoxOffice PVR, to DStv Compact subscribers.

The online version of BoxOffice is available to anyone in South Africa with an Internet connection.
