We Are Social released its “compendium of global digital statistics” on 21 January 2015, including a few slides on Internet usage and penetration in South Africa.
Among the statistics included by the agency was a ranking of the top active social platforms in South Africa.
Citing survey-based data from Global Web Index from Q4 2014, the list ranks social networks and messaging services by what users said they used the most.
The table below summarises the most popular active social platforms in South Africa, as per We Are Social’s “Digital, Social, and Mobile in 2015” report.
The percentages given represent the total national population who used the platforms in the past month, while the figures given in millions of users is derived from the percentages given and the national population We Are Social reported for South Africa.
|Social platform||% Active||Millions of users|
Notably absent from the above list is the home-grown messaging platform Mxit.
According to statistics from World Wide Worx released in September 2014, the average number of unique users on Mxit over a 30-day period was 4.9 million.
“The digital world passed some impressive milestones in 2014,” regional managing partner for Asia at We Are Social wrote.
These milestone were:
- Worldwide social media users exceeded 2 billion back in August.
- Worldwide penetration of mobile phones passed 50% in September.
- The number of global Internet users passed 3 billion in early November.
- The number of active mobile connections surpassed the total world population just last month.
