SA phishing scam case postponed
“The suspects appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court today. They were remanded and the case has been postponed to the 25th of April,” Colonel Tummi Golding said.
The two men, aged 25 and 30, were arrested in raids on their homes in Bavaria and Garsfontein in Pretoria last month.
They were charged with identity fraud and detained at Sunnyside police station.
During the raids, police found and confiscated three laptops, two desktop computers and four cell phones, Golding said.
The suspects were also found in possession of counterfeit cards and manufacturing equipment as well as card data that linked them to the skimming of debit and credit cards.
The phishing scam is believed to have tricked people into divulging their on-line banking details.
The raids began in February as part of an operation conducted by the Absa Fraud Risk Management team and SAPS commercial crime units, said Absa spokesman Patrick Wadula in a statement.
Five people have been arrested in connection with the scam so far.
