Webby Award winners announced
The actor and the world’s most famous puppets were among the winners announced Tuesday for the Webby Awards, which honour the best sites on the web and are often called “the Oscars of the internet.”
Pitt won in the activism category for his Make it Right website, which is raising money to rebuild New Orleans, while the Muppets won the Viral Video award for their rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Other famous winners included Jim Carrey, Amy Poehler, Lisa Kudrow, Isabella Rosellini, Daryl Hall and Steve Colbert. Artist of the year was the band OK Go, who were lauded for their “unparalleled web-saviness.”
The biggest winners were The New York Times and College Humor, both of which picked up five awards.
Pandora won for best music site, Twitter was named the best social networking site, Mint.com won in the financial services category and Evernote was named best mobile application.
The lifetime achievement award went to internet pioneer Vinton Cerf, who designed much of the basic architecture of the internet, while the Webby Person of the Year was given to film critic Roger Ebert.
The Webbys will be handed out in New York on June 14, where recipients will as usual be limited to five-word acceptance speeches.
The awards in dozens of categories were chosen by an international panel of experts including David Bowie, Arianna Huffington and Martha Stewart as well as by online votes.
