The Internet and broadband market in South Africa continues to show growth, and the recent uncapped ADSL revolution started by MWEB is likely to drive even more growth and innovation in this arena.
According to World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck the total number of South African Internet users was 5.3-million at the end of 2009, and this number is set to grow to 9.9-million by 2014.
This continued growth is reflected in the strong increases in traffic shown by local websites. In April no less than eight local websites attracted over a million unique visitors, clearly showing the increased popularity of the Internet in South Africa.
During April Online Publishers’ Association (OPA) registered websites attracted 18,901,937 unique monthly visitors and served 431,207,659 pages.
When it comes to individual websites News24 is more dominant than ever, with 2,878,259 unique monthly visitors during April. MSN South Africa was second with 1,946,461 unique browsers and IOL third with 1,518,665 visitors.
The following table provides an overview of the most popular local websites in April, measured by total unique visitors. This list consists of only OPA registered websites while the statistics are provided by Nielsen Online.
