Top pirated movies on BitTorrent

TorrentFreak has released its latest movie piracy rankings, revealing the most downloaded films through the BitTorrent protocol over the past week.

Cinderalla enetered the charts in second place, while Kidnapping Mr Heineken came in at the bottom of the chart.

Together, the two new movies pushed Wild Card and The Water Diviner out of TorrentFreak’s top 10. Interestingly, the two movies that dropped off the charts were newcomers last week.

The table below shows TorrentFreak’s top 10, and how it compares to the most popular movies available through more legitimate local and international channels.

DStv doesn’t provide a ranking for the most popular movies on its BoxOffice rental service, and as such the titles are in no particular order.

Legal options

Before 2012, South Africans had no real options to rent or buy movies in a digital format online.

Since then, Apple has brought its iTunes Movies service to South Africa, while MultiChoice launched DStv BoxOffice.

Both iTunes and BoxOffice offer transactional video on demand (TVOD) services, which lets users rent movies for a fee and then watch them within a certain period. iTunes Movies also lets you buy movies.

In 2014 South Africa’s video on demand space saw the launch of a number of sites that offer Netflix-like subscription video on demand (SVOD) services.

Vidi from Times Media Group launched first with a hybrid SVOD and TVOD service, shortly followed by the Altech Node and then MTN’s FrontRow.

All of these new VOD services have steadily been adding more and more content to their platforms. This includes a number of the titles that made it onto TorrentFreak’s charts such as Interstellar and The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies.
