South Africa’s biggest websites
Effective Measure has released its website traffic statistics for May 2015, with News24 once again South Africa’s biggest website.
News24 was followed by Gumtree, with Times Live coming in third.
Effective Measure is the official traffic measurement partner of the IAB South Africa, and provides accurate traffic and demographics statistics for South Africa’s top websites.
According to the Effective Measure stats, News24 attracted 5,830,736 South African browsers during May.
Gumtree earned 4,662,790 unique local browsers, followed by Times Live with 2,381,393.
The table below shows the largest IAB SA affiliated websites in South Africa. It should be noted that large websites which are not registered with the IAB SA, like BidorBuy and the local banks, are not included.
It should further be kept in mind that these statistics are for South African visitors only, and all international traffic is therefore excluded.

Top websites visited by South Africans
Effective Measure’s website traffic statistics are accurate because of its tracking system.
All IAB affiliated websites load tracking code in their websites, which makes accurate traffic measurements possible.
Alexa, in comparison, uses panel-based data from its toolbar users to rank websites based on traffic. This is not as accurate as Effective Measure’s cookie-based tracking.
Alexa does, however, provide a rough overview of the most popular websites visited by South African Internet users over the past 30 days.
