Tectonic relaunches
Tectonic, one of the only websites in Africa specialising in open source news, has been relaunched.
The site, which closed down in July last year, began publishing again on June 1.
Tectonic editor and founder, Alastair Otter, closed the site last year saying that other projects and pressures had made it difficult to keep it running. “At the time I was involved in a number of other projects and the added pressure of maintaining the site, which wasn’t my primary job, became too much.”
“The decision to restart Tectonic wasn’t an overnight decision. When I first closed it down many people approached me with ideas of restarting it but I didn’t have the time to do it. Over the past year things have changed and I now feel better placed to work on Tectonic again.”
“During the 11 months that I wasn’t publishing Tectonic it became very clear that almost no publications give any coverage to open source software in Africa. I’ve always believed that there are great open source projects and people in Africa and part of the motivation to restart Tectonic was to start doing this again.
“It’s also important to provide an African perspective on major international news. Too often this is ignored.”
Funding the site, says Otter, will largely be through a combination of online advertising, community support and related projects. “I have a number of open source-related projects that I am hoping to launch from the site,” he says.
