This is how South Africans pirate online

MyBroadband’s survey of video entertainment preferences in South Africa shows that local pirates prefer to download torrent files from Kickass Torrents, and mostly use µTorrent for peer-to-peer downloading.

The survey was completed by 2,889 IT professionals and tech-savvy individuals.

Results were in line with MyBroadband’s online piracy survey conducted earlier in 2015, with 53% of respondents saying that they have downloaded copyrighted material without the proper licence in the past 12 months.

TV shows are the most popular content among downloaders, followed by movies. Music and software piracy follows in a distant third and fourth place respectively.

BitTorrent is by far the most popular method of downloading, and The Pirate Bay comes a distant second to Kickass Torrents for the title of South Africa’s favourite torrent tracker.

Most downloaders watch content from a laptop or PC connected to a monitor or television, while a smaller percentage stream content over smart TVs, media boxes, or video game consoles.
