Rapid broadband adoption puts SA Internet users at risk
President and CEO of Symantec, Enrique Salem, says that South Africa is seeing many brand new users connecting to the Internet for the first time due to the large rapid adoption of broadband in the country right now. He went on to say that it’s as fast now as anywhere in the world.
“The weakest link [in security] is the end user,” Salem said.
According to Salem a larger number of South African computers are compromised and used as a botnet – a launching platforms for attacks.
“People want to take advantage of rich media, things they haven’t had access to before,” he said.
Salem added that an important part of securing end user systems against socially engineered attacks is educating them and that there’s an opportunity to do so in South Africa.
To that end Symantec has launched 2010netthreats.com to try and inform users about the scams circulating around the Internet surrounding the FIFA World Cup. According to a representative the site has seen around 40 000 unique hits thus far.
According to the 2010 Net Threats website the latest scam to look out for is an email scam that not only offers the recipients cash, but also flights to South Africa, accommodation and match tickets.
