South Africa’s biggest websites, without 24.com

Effective Measure’s website traffic statistics for July 2015 show that Gumtree attracted the most South African visitors, followed by IOL, and TimesLive.

Effective Measure is the official traffic measurement partner of the IAB South Africa, and provides accurate traffic and demographics statistics for SA’s top websites.

News24 has dominated local website rankings in recent years, but this time around no 24.com properties are included in the Effective Measure ranking.

24.com said it has stopped its Effective Measure code for a few weeks as part of a review on privacy and the protection of personal information.

“To ensure that we are complying with local and international legislation, and the best interests of our clients and consumers, we will be reviewing all our data collection and management policies as well as the vendors that supply them,” said 24.com.

This means that 24.com’s News24, Fin24, Health24, Careers24, Sport24, and Channel24 are not included in the latest rankings.

The table below shows the largest IAB SA-affiliated websites in South Africa for July, based on unique South African visitors.

The table above only shows IAB SA-affiliated websites in South Africa, which means that large websites not registered with the IAB SA are not included.

To get an overview of the most popular websites visited by South Africans, irrespective of where the website is based or who it is affiliated with, Alexa is a fair source.

While Alexa’s statistics are not as accurate as Effective Measure’s cookie-based tracking, it provides a more complete picture of SA’s Internet space – using panel-based data from its toolbar users to rank websites based on traffic.
