More than one million .co.za domains have been registered since the zone was first created in 1992, the ZA Central Registry (ZACR) reported on 19 August.
The organisation recently added a counter to their website for the occasion, which showed the number of domains that still had to be registered to reach the milestone.
Earlier in 2015, the ZACR reported that it had passed the million domain mark across all the subdomains and top-level domains it runs, including co.za, org.za, .capetown, .joburg, and .durban.
It also recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of 221 ZACR-registered domains, including mtn.co.za, multichoice.co.za, bmw.co.za, jse.co.za, nestle.co.za, anglo.co.za, and telkom.co.za.
While the ZACR started administering the co.za zone in 1995, the domain name space is older than that, with the first ever co.za domain name, bksinc.co.za, registered on 25 June 1992.
The second domain name was paradigm.co.za, which was registered on 13 July 1992. It was followed by uiscpt.co.za, which was registered the following day.
A list of early co.za domain name registrations is available on the Internet.org.za website.
