ShowMax to let users download TV shows, movies instead of streaming: report

ShowMax plans to allow users to download movies and TV shows through the service – an alternative measure to the current streaming-only format used by Nasper’s online media player.

According to a report by Bloomberg, a person familiar with the matter stated that prohibitively-expensive broadband access in South Africa was a barrier to people using the streaming service – hence the non-streaming move by ShowMax.

The company told Bloomberg that while it was “exploring a number of future product enhancements”, ShowMax is “only available as a streaming service at present”.

ShowMax Premium costs R99 per month and gives subscribers unlimited access to the service’s library, with videos streaming in resolutions of up to 720p.
