Wikipedia page views show online search trends

Researchers in Japan have published a paper which shows that Wikipedia’s publicly-available page view data provides insight into web trends.

The research showed a high correlation between frequently-searched keywords and Wikipedia page views.

“This suggests that Wikipedia page views can be an effective tool for determining popular global web search trends,” the researchers said.

The research found that keywords which were accessed more than 1,000 times per day on their corresponding Wikipedia web pages showed a monthly correlation coefficient of 0.72 with the search frequencies obtained by Google Trends.
