Email scams such as phishing remain a problem for all internet and online banking users.
According to Lee-Anne Van Zyl, CEO of FNB online, FNB had previously sought to address the issue with customer education and behind-the-scenes protection software.
Van Zyl says that the the number of customers that expose themselves to fraud by giving up their online banking information is relatively small. She believes that education drives by FNB, industry groups such as SABRIC and other banks have achieved a great deal.
Malware designed to steal a user’s confidential banking information may be embedded in unsolicited email and may be triggered by simply opening an email, asserted Van Zyl. She also added that malware may be hidden on websites.
FNB Online Banking have announced that they will be offering Prevx SafeOnline in partnership with Prevx, a UK-based security company. Van Zyl says the software protects against phishing, malware and spyware across all online activities.
This is the first time that this software will be offered in South Africa, said Van Zyl.
Van Zyl promised that the system requires a small initial download of less than 1MB and takes less than 1 minute to install, after which a user will be fully protected. The software also updates itself automatically to ensure that the latest protection measures are applied, said Van Zyl.
The download is offered to FNB Online Banking and Online Banking Enterprise users.
According to FNB Online, the service is available to both their personal and commercial banking clients.
