South African techies are big Internet pirates

Music pirate piracy

MyBroadband’s latest broadband survey shows that the majority of tech-savvy broadband users in South Africa use services like BitTorrent or Usenet to download movies, TV series, or music.

The Q4 2015 broadband survey was completed by 3,444 IT professionals and tech-savvy South African broadband users.

The survey showed that 58% of surveyed individuals said they use BitTorrent or Usenet services for their entertainment needs.

The use of BitTorrent and Usenet is closely linked to online piracy – copyright infringement – of movies, TV series, and music.

Many tech-savvy users do, however, opt for legal alternatives. 28% of surveyed individuals said they subscribe to a video streaming service like Netflix, Showmax, or Hulu.
