Biggest torrent tracker in the world to shut down
Demonii, the largest public BitTorrent tracker in the world, will shut down soon, TorrentFreak has reported.
This is because YTS (Yify), the group best known for its DVD and Blu-Ray movie rips on torrent sites, also operates Demonii.
YTS closed after the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) filed court papers in New Zealand and threatened a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the person who ran YTS.
The MPAA also got an interim injunction to shut down the YTS site.
Demonii reports that it currently serves over 40 million peers and 30 million seeds, while tracking over 4.5 million torrents.
A graph of its weekly statistics is embedded below.
While the loss of Demonii will have a tremendous impact on the torrent ecosystem, TorrentFreak said most torrents will still work fine.
It also predicted that others would step into the gap Demonii leaves behind, as has often happened when copyright owners manage to shut down prominent torrent services.
