‘Please pirate our porn’

The battle between online pirates and producers of copyrighted materials – typically movies, music and TV series – is ongoing without any long term solution in sight.

Despite the increasing collaboration between companies and even countries to fight copyright infringement, growing broadband penetration rates globally and more sophisticated content sharing platforms mean that it is becoming an increasingly difficult battle to win.

But not all content producers are bumping heads with pirates.  In a surprise statement Private Media Group CEO Berth Milton said that they “will be extremely happy the more people are pirating our content and the more they look at it”.

Private Media Group is currently one of the largest producers of adult entertainment, and owns the worldwide rights to its extensive archive of high-quality content, and also licenses its Private and “Silver Girls” trademarks internationally for a select range of luxury consumer products.

Private Media Group recently launched their new membership pay-site platform, and this week announced that Harmony Films has become the first adult studio to utilize its new membership pay-site platform.

But despite its paid-for content and business model Milton said that they are not going to battle online pirates any longer, and that he sees it as a promotional tool rather than something which they should fight. According to Milton fighting online piracy is a battle which can not be won, and they are exploring business models which are not threatened by piracy.

Milton pointed to the scenario where the music industry may have taken a knock in music sales due to online piracy, but because of the increased consumption of artists’ music live concerts have become very popular – providing a different, lucrative revenue stream.

Rather than wasting resources fighting piracy Milton said that companies should embrace piracy and make their content available free of charge to capitalize in other ways on the enormous traffic it generates.
