Most popular movies on BitTorrent, iTunes, Google, and DStv Box Office

TorrentFreak recently released its list of the most pirated movies of the past week.

Many of the titles that make TorrentFreak’s charts aren’t widely available, and it is interesting to compare the top-10 charts from legitimate online platforms to its piracy ranking.

The tables below show how iTunes and Google Play Movies’ charts in the US and South Africa compare to the top pirated movies list.

A comparison of the charts of legal video services available in South Africa, including DStv BoxOffice, is also shown.

Legal options

While it is not illegal to use BitTorrent to download content, it is illegal (perhaps even criminal) to torrent copyrighted media without permission.

In the past, South Africans didn’t have many options to buy or rent films online, but the situation has changed in the past few years.

DStv’s BoxOffice movie rental launched in 2011 and was brought to the web in 2012.

Apple launched iTunes Movies in South Africa at the end of 2012, while services like Netflix, ShowMax, Vidi, VU, and OntapTV launched in recent years.

Google Movies came to South Africa in February 2016.
