Fastest torrent sites

As with just about anything on the Internet, private torrent sites race to see who can get “releases” up first.

According to a recent post on TorrentFreak these sites compete for the number one spot in a TRACE (or Torrent Race). The first group with a particular “release,” such as a video game, movie, or recent episode of a series, available on their trackers wins.

Using TorrentFreak’s list of top 10 movie downloads for last week we determine which torrent trackers put the threes in “3lit3.”

Despite the potential accusations of “talking about fight club,” the actual names of the top trackers are revealed below.

The database from which the stats are queried only returns acronyms to identify trackers, but a simple Google search will easily reveal which trackers are represented by the acronyms.

For the purposes of the comparison we only looked at the earliest non-“nuked,” release of a particular movie. “Nuking” can mean a number of things, but in this context it generally means rejected, recalled or deleted.

To keep the table size manageable the full names of the movies aren’t listed. T1 to T10 represent the most torrented movies from last week to the least torrented movie.

Position T1 T2 T3 T4 T5 T6 T7 T8 T9 T10
1 SCC DH SCC DH SeX TL TL DH TL SCC
2 DH SCC TL TL DDT SCC SCC SCC DDT TL
3 AT TL DH IPT AT SeX DH AL TBy DH
4 TBy AL HS HS DH DH AT ST DH TBy
5 AL FF XNT XNT TL HS DDT TL SCC FF
6 THS HS AL AL FF FF AL TB AT HS
7 RDS IPT TBy AT SCC AL TBy TD XNT AL
8 IPT ST TB ST HS TBy IPT DDT FF XNT
9 TL XNT ST TBy XNT ST FF TV HS SeX
10 HS AT FF TD AL TB HS THS AL PTM

A simple count reveals that SceneAccess (SCC), TorrentLeech (TL) and DigitalHive (DH) are the top three private trackers by quite a margin. They all rank among the top three fastest trackers for seven of the top ten movies from last week. The next closest tracker only features in the top 3 twice.

The top three trackers were tied for firsts, but if one uses the number of times they came in second and third as tiebreakers, SceneAccess wins by a narrow margin.

Private tracker Firsts Seconds Thirds TOTAL
SceneAccess (SCC) 3 4 0 7
TorrentLeech (TL) 3 3 1 7
DigitalHive (DH) 3 1 3 7
SceneXpress (SeX) 1 0 1 2
DIDIDave (DDT) 0 2 0 2

The tie was broken by the DVD screener of The Social Network, the second most torrented movie of last week next to the DVD rip of Inception.

In the TRACE for the release, DigitalHive won, SceneAccess came second by 6.11 seconds and TorrentLeech was 13.14 seconds too slow. According to the TRACE database used, DigitalHive had the movie in their tracker 4 minutes and 13.14 seconds after it was first leaked onto the Internet.

If the statistics are to be believed the competition between private torrent trackers for the privilege of being able to call “First!” is fierce and close.
