MultiChoice has taken a decision not to continue with its .dstv, .supersport, .mnet, .kyknet, and .multichoice TLD applications.

The announcement follows news that ICANN sent termination notices for many local top level domain names, including .dstv, .supersport, .mzansimagic, .mnet, .kyknet, .africamagic, .multichoice, and .gotv.

Domain Name Wire reported that ICANN issued termination notices to ten contracted new top level domain name applicants.

The ICANN termination notices informed them that it plans to cancel their top level domain agreements.

MultiChoice told MyBroadband it took a decision “not to continue with these brand-specific domain names at this time”.

Instead, it will focus on managing the online presence of its brands through its existing domain names and websites, said MultiChoice.

ICANN developed the new generic top-level domain (gTLD) programme to increase competition and choice by introducing new gTLDs into the Internet’s addressing system.

Internet users have grown accustomed to .com, .net, or .org domains, but this list is set to grow substantially with the gTLDs.

Hat tip to TechCentral for spotting the story.
