Things looking up for .XXX TLD
The .XXX top level domain (TLD) has had a long and controversial history since it was first proposed. On 1 June 2005 the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that it had preliminarily approved the .XXX as a sponsored TLD, but this decision was short lived.
The ICANN board voted not to approve the agreement as proposed in May 2006, but posted two revisions for public comment early in 2007. Since 2007 there have been many forwards and backwards moves on the dot triple-X sTLD, and the ICANN board finally approved the .XXX proposal in June 2010.
The ICM Registry, which is sponsoring the .XXX sTLD, said in June this year that it was delighted that the ICANN Board has approved the .XXX top-level domain.
“The decision should soon bring to fruition our six-year effort to create a specific Web address for online adult entertainment, and comes on the heels of an independent review that declared that ICANN’s previous decision to deny .xxx was wrong,” the ICM Registry said.
It looks increasingly likely that .XXX Internet domains will be with us soon, but this domain does not come without its opponents.
ICANN director Mike Silber said that apart from lobby groups who argue that the .XXX sTLD are morally questionable and would legitimize pornography, many current adult website owners operating under the .com TLD are also not happy with the dot triple-X domain.
“Critics of the idea argue that because there is no requirement for providers of explicit content to use the TLD, sexually explicit material will still be commonplace in other domains, making it ineffectual at restricting access, and simply creating a new “landrush” as registrants of .com domains hosting explicit material attempt to duplicate their registrations in the .xxx domain, competing with operators who hope to register desirable names unavailable in other TLDs,” an article on WikiPedia states.
Silber however said that despite the objections it is likely that the new .XXX domain is not too far off.
