Yahoo researchers develop new online abuse detector

Yahoo researchers have developed a machine learning-based method of detecting hate speech in online user comments.

In a research paper titled Abusive Language Detection in Online User Content, the authors said their method “outperforms a state-of-the-art deep learning approach”.

“We also developed a corpus of user comments annotated for abusive language, the first of its kind,” the researchers said.

“Finally, we use our detection tool to analyse abusive language over time and in different settings to further enhance our knowledge of this behaviour.”
