2016 Rio Olympics scammers using co.za domain

Scammers trying to steal people’s money by telling them they have won R1.75 million in a 2016 Rio Olympics Promotion are using a co.za domain name.

The scammers are targeting South Africans, with the co.za domain name part of the ploy.

The domain, vavosascofirm.co.za, was anonymously registered using the service Domains By Proxy.

Domains By Proxy hides the identity of people who register a domain and do not want their personal information available in the Whois directory.

The scam email, which was sent from the name “McCann, Lisbeth” reads:

Your RSA Email has won R1.75M in the 2016 Rio Olympic Promotions with Ref: BRZ/SA/01/08/16. Contact; [email protected] or 00447937349377. T’s and C’s apply!

Users who receive this email are advised to ignore it.
