Facebook agrees to suspend using WhatsApp user data
Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office said Facebook has agreed to suspend using data from UK WhatsApp users for advertisements or product-improvement purposes.
According to a report by Reuters, the Office said Facebook will face “enforcement action” if it uses the data without valid consent.
“The two companies have also come under scrutiny from the European Union’s 28 data protection authorities, who last month requested that WhatsApp pause sharing users’ data,” stated the report.
Facebook and WhatsApp have also been asked to sign an undertaking to better explain to consumers how their data is shared between the platforms, stated Reuters.
“We think consumers deserve a greater level of information and protection, but so far Facebook hasn’t agreed,” said the ICO.
