ABSA website downtime explained

Many users visiting the ABSA website last night were met with a message which they did not expect: The IBM Websphere “Welcome to IBM HTTP Server” screen.

This issue drew sharp criticism from consumers with comments like “Very Bad IT Management and or planning! If this is what a corporate company like ABSA’s website look like, I question the ability of its staff keeping my money safe online after seeing this carelessness!”

One MyBroadband forum member also published screenshots of the ABSA website during this period, with a related discussion in this thread.

The ABSA website was back to normal early on Friday morning, and ABSA explained that the reason for the downtime was routine maintenance.

“In support of increasing customer demand and usage of the Absa Digital Channels, routine scheduled maintenance and server upgrade work was undertaken between 10h00pm and 12h30am last night,” explained Adrian Vermooten, Head: Mobile and Messaging, Absa Digital Channels.

“This type of scheduled work is planned to take place during low usage periods (i.e. mid month) when customer impact is likely to be minimal. Quality customer experience on all Absa Digital Channels is of paramount importance to us; hence these periodical routine upgrades.”
