ISPs and media companies in the US have stopped sending online piracy violation notices – a move which formed part of the Copyright Alert System.
According to a report by Engadget, the notices “weren’t up to the job”.
The notices helped “educate” consumers, but they did not deter them from continuing to pirate content.
Movie studios and producers have long called for ISPs to identify users who are illegally downloading content and block popular sites used to share copyrighted material – such as torrent sites.
