Afrihost has stated it is not giving away an iPhone X as part of a “customer survey”.
MyBroadband received a report from a reader that while he was visiting a torrent website, he received a pop-up which contained an “Afrihost survey”.
As he was an Afrihost client, and the Internet connection he was on was from Afrihost, the initial screen asking for feedback on customer satisfaction appeared legitimate.
After clicking the “Very Satisfied” option on the pop-up, he was taken to a screen which said he had won an iPhone X. This is when he realised it was likely a scam.
After clicking through the remaining screens, he reached a menu which required him to submit his contact details and pay $1 to receive the iPhone X.
Afrihost told MyBroadband it is not running a competition like this, and it was concerned by the fake survey.
“We have a team dedicated to ensuring that our clients are protected from this type of fraud,” said Afrihost.
“We’d encourage any client who receives this message to ignore it and never respond or click through.”
Afrihost said it implements security measures where possible to keep its clients protected from fraud.
It alerts customers to changes of their ClientZone details and blocks known phishing URLs on its network, it said.
