Waste exchange website set to reduce illegal dumping
The intention is “to create a virtual area where waste can be exchanged between waste generators and users”.
The environment and health committee was told this week that once the website had been set up and testing completed, a marketing plan would be drawn up.
The committee was also informed that the housing and land directorate had indicated a process was in place to relocate the families living on the Ibhayi waste site before its closure and rehabilitation. This had been in “limbo” until the occupants of the informal settlement had been relocated.
Annette Lovemore (DA) pointed out that the people living on the site had been there for several years in “extremely dangerous conditions” and it was only now, some 12 years later, that they were being relocated.
The committee was told tenders for the outsourcing and management of five strategically sited refuse transfer/recycling facilities in Algoa Park, Fifth Avenue Walmer, Summerstrand, Hunters Retreat and Kragga Kamma would be submitted to the evaluation and adjudication committees. The initiative is part of the strategy to reduce illegal dumping and promote recycling.
