“Right-wing white people” behind ANCYL hack: Shivambu
The ANC Youth League website has suffered a number of hacking attacks in 2011. Their website was defaced in March, and then again in May, and most recently in July – twice within the space of two days.
On 24 July, the website was defaced with the text ““HA HA HA. I have a 16 Million Rand house and all of you don’t!!!!” added next to an image of Malema’s face in the ANCYL’s website home page.
On 25 July, an image was left displaying a picture of president Jacob Zuma and ANCYL president Julius Malema with the headline “Dumb & Dumber”. The website further displayed the text “Computer science is NOT on his matric results!” next to the image.
The ANCYL website’s hosting and web development company, Cape Town based Unwembi, told MyBroadband that they currently don’t know how the website was hacked. According to Unwembi they are using a combination of open source and custom systems for the website, and they are looking at a more secure platform for the website to avoid future security breaches.
ANC Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu has some ideas on who was responsible, telling the Mail&Guardian that right-wing whites are behind the hacks. “There are some right-wing white people who are always hacking that website. Even the web developer has said such people are doing that,” said Shivambu. “The developers are trying to find security for the website and they will do that successfully.”
In response, Duncan Harford, business development manager at Unwembi, disputed Shivambu’s statement, telling the Mail&Guardian that “You can’t ascertain the colour of a person from an IP [internet protocol] address. So, no, I never told Floyd it was white people.”
