WikiLeaks releases thousands more cables

The organisation posted a message on its Twitter feed saying, “We will have released over 100,000 US embassy cables from around the world by the end of today (25 August 2011)”.

The cables are believed to be part of a cache of more than 250,000 U.S. state department reports that were previously leaked to the group. Wikileaks have previously released the cables online, albeit in smaller batches.

According to Reuters, several news agencies including themselves have been in possession of the complete sets of cables for months; however most media outlets only publish and report on specific cables that are topically relevant to their readership.

WikiLeaks posted on their website that they had so far published 97,115 of the 251,287 documents in their possession by late afternoon on 25 August.
