Naufal Khan, 27, based in Rosebank, Johannesburg, decided to create the place of worship to enable people to discuss religion, post prayers, share spiritual experiences and exchange information on how to perform prayers and rituals.
He has even helped a Facebook user arrange her wedding.
“The bride-to-be is in Johannesburg and her fiancé is in the United States. Through communication via the group, we managed to locate a wedding planner in Durban — where the event will take place — to arrange everything for her,” he said.
“One day I looked around on Facebook and found that among all the strange groups we had, there had to be one for divine inspiration — a place where Facebook users from all walks of life can come together and share their experiences and trips to religious locations, and give others a dose of spiritual inspiration.
“With that in mind, one morning I created the Facebook Place of Worship.”
The portal, still in its infancy, has more than 80 members, mostly young professionals, from South Africa and abroad.
Khan, who also manages the Facebook group Gay Desi — described as a gay or gay-friendly group — said users had responded well to his virtual place of worship.
