Top 10 mobile websites in SA

Opera publishes a monthly report entitled “State of the Mobile Web” based on the usage statistics of its Opera Mini browser, which reveals the top 10 sites and handsets for the countries that show the highest usage of the mobile phone browser.

In Opera’s September 2011 report (which was only released in late October), South Africa still ranks as the seventh largest user of Opera Mini.

The highlights of South Africa’s September usage, according to Opera, were as follows:

  • Page-view growth since September 2010: 71.0%.
  • Unique-user growth since September 2010: 55.8%.
  • Data transfer growth since September 2010: 65.9%.
  • Page views per user: 470.
  • Data transferred per user (MB): 5.
  • Data transferred per page view (KB): 10.

Though one may argue that Opera’s statistics only come from a single browser, it is worth noting that according to StatCounter, Opera accounted for 66% of mobile browser usage in South Africa in September 2011.

Opera Mini also accounted for a significant proportion of overall visits (1.82%) and page views (1.01%) on MyBroadband during September.

One must take into account that Opera Mini only ranks slightly lower than its desktop equivalent, Opera, and that the next closest browser contributed 0.38% of MyBroadband’s overall visits.

Google Analytics also revealed that 2.18% of all page views and 3.33% of all visits to MyBroadband were from a mobile device.

This means that 46.3% of all page views from a mobile device and 54.6% of all mobile visits to MyBroadband come from Opera Mini.

Placed in that context, here are the top 10 sites (by unique visitors) among South African Opera Mini users:

  6. (up from 7)
  7. (up from 9)
  8. (down from 6)
  9. (down from 8)
