DStv BoxOffice Online launch delayed
MultiChoice has confirmed that the launch of the online version of its on-demand movie rental service, BoxOffice, has been delayed until Q1 2012.
BoxOffice was first launched on DStv’s satellite platform to premium subscribers towards the middle of this year (2011).
At the launch, DStv Online CEO John Kotsaftis said that they hadn’t forgotten about online and would bring BoxOffice to the Internet by the end of 2011.
Kotsaftis promised that the service would be available to all South Africans – not just DStv subscribers and that they plan to support both Windows and Mac PCs.
He also explained that they are looking at using a PC as a kind of PVR (personal video recorder) rather than streaming the video, to work within South Africa’s bandwidth constrained environment.
Although all their other plans still seem to be intact, MultiChoice said that they are still busy with testing and have rescheduled the launch for the first quarter of 2012.
“We will initially start a limited beta service, which will later be followed by a full commercial launch,” MultiChoice said.
“As communicated previously, this service will be available to all South African consumers. DStv is committed to launching world-class services to the market,” the pay TV operator added.
