Most popular websites among South Africans

MyBroadband recently published an article which showed that News24 is the most popular local website, followed by Howzit.MSN and IOL (article here).

This list however only includes South African websites which form part of the country’s industry body, the Digital Media and Marketing Association (DMMA).

These websites all run tracking code from the DMMA’s traffic measurement partner Effective Measure, which means that very accurate statistics and ranking is possible.

Because of the DMMA membership and Effective Measure tagging requirements, there are a few large South African websites absent from this list, such as BidorBuy, Gumtree, FNB, ABSA and Standard Bank.

The DMMA/Effective Measure list also does not list popular international websites like Google, Facebook or YouTube.

A service which helps to ascertain which websites South African users visit the most is Alexa. To rank websites Alexa trusts on statistics from their community of Alexa Toolbar users where data is collected and sent to Alexa for processing.

It should be noted that Alexa only provides a rough estimate of website traffic and rank, and is not as accurate or trusted as Effective Measure’s statistics.

According to Alexa’s South African rankings, Google.co.za is the most popular website in South Africa, followed by Facebook and Google.com. When it comes to South African only websites, BidorBuy is ranked top, followed by Gumtree and News24.

The following table provides an overview of the most popular websites among South African Internet users who have the Alexa toolbar installed.
