Video Hub, a new video-on-demand (VOD) service set to launch on the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablet PC, will let South Africans rent or purchase movies and TV series.

During the unveiling of the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 for South Africa, Samsung SA’s head of mobile product and software solutions, Paulo Ferreira, revealed that they plan to launch Video Hub in 2012.

According to Samsung, Video Hub offers over 1,000 film titles for purchase or rent and provides reviews, trailers, and recommendations.

Users will be able to begin viewing content before it is fully downloaded, Ferreira said.

Craige Fleischer, business leader for mobile communications at Samsung South Africa, explained during an interview with MyBroadband that Video Hub would have movies and TV series available for purchase or rent.

Fleishcer said that he didn’t know if the actual model has been set up for the South African market yet, but confirmed that they do have plans to launch Video Hub locally.

Content from the service will be available in HD as well, Fleischer said.

There is a lack of video on-demand services officially operating in South Africa, with only MultiChoice offering an online movie rental service called BoxOffice.

BoxOffice Online is still in closed beta and available to those users who signed up during the beta period.
