Google Bard can now “understand” YouTube videos

Google has updated its Bard AI chatbot to gain more in-depth access to content in YouTube videos.
The Internet giant said the new capability would allow Bard to understand the content of a video better.
“We’re expanding the YouTube Extension to understand some video content so you can have a richer conversation with Bard about it,” Google said.
While Bard has been able to analyse YouTube videos since an update in September, it has not been able to examine their content and interpret it to provide feedback to users.
With the latest update, users can ask questions about information in the video, and Bard will quickly search for the relevant information.
“For example, if you’re looking for videos on how to make olive oil cake, you can now also ask how many eggs the recipe in the first video requires,” Google said.
Users could also ask what tools are being used in a DIY video, what components make up a PC build, or ask for more details about events depicted in the video.
To use the feature, you will need to opt-in to the Bard experiment at bard.google.com and enable its YouTube extension.
On mobile, this option can be found under the hamburger menu on the top left, while the desktop portal will show it under the puzzle icon at the top right.
Once enabled, you can paste the YouTube link into a Bard chat and ask questions about it.
We posted a link to a Linus Tech Tips review of a new VR headset and asked Bard what the reviewer liked about it.
Within a few seconds, Bard provided the response below, summarising what Linus believed were the good and bad aspects of the headset.
