Threads getting fact-checking early next year
Meta Platforms is taking a page out of Twitter’s (now X’s) book and plans to implement a fact-checking feature for user-created content in Threads, the company announced in a blog post.
However, the fact-checking feature won’t be community-based. Instead, Meta said third-party fact-checking partners will flag and review content.
“Early next year, our third-party fact-checking partners will be able to review and rate false content on Threads,” it said.
This is a significant change from its current system, which lets fact-checkers rate a piece of content as false on Facebook or Instagram, and then Meta extends the fact-checking rating to similar content in Threads.
Threads users can increase, lower, or maintain the standard level of “demotions on fact-checked content” shown in their personal feeds.
These settings apply across Meta’s platforms. For example, setting it to the lowest level in Instagram will also roll over the setting to Threads.
“We recently gave Instagram and Facebook users more controls, allowing them to decide how much sensitive or, if they’re in the US, how much fact-checked content they see on each app,” said Meta.
“Consistent with that approach, we’re also bringing these controls to Threads to give people in the US the ability to choose whether they want to increase, lower or maintain the default level of demotions on fact-checked content in their Feed.”
In comparison, Twitter’s (now X’s) community moderation features let other users flag content as false or misinformation and add annotations to explain why.
